Yesterday, I harvested the first few pole beans from our Blue Lake plants. It was just a bare handful, but it is still a nice start. The beans were planted in mid-May in two different locations – a southern exposure plot and in a pair of Earthboxes (EarthBox 80155 Garden Kit, Organic, Terracotta) on the back deck. Both locations get full sun all afternoon. We’ve had our Earthboxes for more than ten years now and they’ve been planted with beans about half of the time, always producing a great crop.
If you ever buy fresh green beans at the grocery store, raising your own can save you quite a bit of money. I’ve mostly seen 2-pound packages of fresh beans for around $4, depending on season – by comparison, a packet of bean seeds is generally less than $2 and will produce far more than just two pounds of beans. Our pole beans will continue to produce well into mid-fall and we usually pick several pounds’ worth every week. One or two nights a week, we have them with dinner and any excess during the week go into the freezer so we can enjoy them throughout the colder months of the year.
